Lehigh University Mountaintop Research Initiative:
Pop-up Parklets

Challenge:
Parklets are an urban design movement begun in cities like San Francisco, Philadelphia, and New York, where small community spaces are constructed to improve neighborhood walkability and accessibility. A team of students must construct, install, identify local businesses, market, collect data and do some preliminary reporting on their findings with the summer’s parklet initiative which will be installed in South Bethlehem in front of a local business.

Woodwork & jointery

Challenge:
Apply learned jointery and wood techniques, and design a functional table using a jointery technique

Solution:
A visit to Wharton Esherick’s home inspired both of these pieces. To be perfectly honest, I cannot remember why I made the Breast Plate; all I know is that I was watching Game of Thrones at the time, I had a vision (tunnel vision), and it felt right. This is one of my favorite pieces that always sparks conversation when I have guests over at my apartment!

The coffee table I created was made using dowel joints, a live edge piece of oak for the table-top, and oak for the table legs/base.

3D Printing & rendering: children’s shoe

Challenge:
Design a flexible, functional children’s shoe using a 3D Printer

Solution:
The Booster is a stylish, unisex, slip-on sneaker and utility boot for any child and occasion.

Horizontal cutouts on the front and back of the shoe allow for flexibility using a rigid material (3D printing filament), with side opening on each side for breathability.

Standard redesign: hotel-key lightswitch & cardholder prototype

Challenge:
Redesign a commonly used, American industry standard design

Solution:
The lightswitch is an object that has become a universal standard across the world. While some vary in shape and function, there are only a small variety.

My prototype of a lightswitch is designed to replace the average light switch for a hotel room. Finding inspiration in European hotel room lightswitches, I created a light switch prototype that opens on the other side of the door, when the room key is inserted.

Illuminating the main room and transforming into a coat hook for convenience, this light switch saves energy and keeps your key in an unforgettable place.

Lighting design

Challenge:
Design a light fixture that illuminates shadows in a dark room

Solution:
I designed a wall unit that emulated a galaxy using various materials and the CNC-Router to cut different shapes to create shadows and the illusion of space.

Surface texture

Challenge:
Create an edge using a soft 4"×3"×2.25" prototyping foam

Solution:
The surface object was made using a 4"×3"×2.25" prototyping foam that was carved, resined, sanded, spray-painted and buffed with a gloss finish. The object intentionally has one leading edge that is continuous throughout the entire shape to distinguish its curves and sides. The base was created out of broken mirror to highlight the objects surface and edges.

OSB Plywood chair

Challenge:
Using one, 40''x32'' sheet of OSB, design a functional chair that can hold a 200lb load

Solution:
Limited to a 40''x32'' sheet of OSB, I made a desk-size chair using AUTOCAD and a CNC router. By learning to optimize material and space the chair is able to be assembled in less than 2 minutes and is able to seat a 200lb load.

Marker renderings: vacuum edition

Challenge:
Create renderings of electronic technology for the years 2012, 2016, and 2020

Solution:
Inspired by tech trends in 2012, 2016, and, imaginative trends in 2020, I designed three different types of marker renderings of handheld vacuums that embodied the trends of their time.
